When you're drawn to both nature and history, Kanchanaburi stands out as a
must-visit destination. This place masterfully blends historical sites with lush
tropical landscapes, and it's conveniently located just 3 hours from Bangkok.
Kanchanaburi, a province in western Thailand, is teeming with activities that
might make you want to extend your stay and fall deeper in love with it. For
nature enthusiasts, there's no shortage of attractions. The province is
surrounded by several national parks, offering chances to marvel at stunning
waterfalls, diverse wildlife including gibbons, monkeys, and a variety of birds.
1. Bridge on the River Kwai (Death Railway Bridge)
The River Kwai Bridge is Kanchanaburi's most iconic landmark. Built during WWII
by prisoners to support the Thai-Burmese railway, it's a piece of controversial
history. The bridge, part of the infamous "Death Railway," owes its name to the
numerous lives lost during its construction. Visitors can walk or take a train
across the bridge, parts of which remain from the original structure. The area
is also a market hub, with stalls selling food and souvenirs.
2. Retreat by a Floating Water Villa
Experience ultimate relaxation in a wooden villa floating on water. Enjoy the
serenity of nature from your private balcony, dive into the water from your
deck, explore by boat, or canoe at your leisure. Witness breathtaking sunsets
over the jungle.
3. Erawan Waterfall
This 7-tiered waterfall in the tropical rainforest boasts unique beauty at each
level. The first two tiers are easily accessible, offering a cool, refreshing
escape. The "Fish Palace" at the second tier is a perfect spot for photos and a
swim among gentle fish. For a crowd-free experience, visit early in the morning.

ruins, centered around the Bayon-style main shrine, Prasat Muang Singh.
5. Wat Thipsukhontharam
Home to the 32-meter-tall bronze Buddha statue amidst landscaped gardens, this
site is a serene place for contemplation and admiration.
6. Wooden Mon Bridge
Thailand's longest wooden bridge in Sangkhla Buri, built in the 1980s, stretches
across the Song Kalia River to Mon village Wang Kha. It's a testament to
traditional craftsmanship and community spirit.
7. Chong Kai War Cemetery
Originally established by POWs, this cemetery is the final resting place for
1,426 Commonwealth and 313 Dutch soldiers from WWII. It's a beautifully
maintained site of remembrance.
